Amenorrhea is the complete absence of menstruation in patients during the reproductive span of life. It is not a disease, but a symptom.

Recognize the causes, diagnosis, and treatment of amenorrhea

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

 

By the end of this course, the student will be able to:

l        Define the problem of primary and secondary amenorrhea

l        Enumerate the physiological causes of amenorrhea

l        Recognize cryptomenorrhea, with special emphasis on imperforate hymen

l        List the hypothalamic causes of amenorrhea

l        List the pituitary causes of amenorrhea with emphasis on Sheehan’s syndrome

l        List the ovarian causes of amenorrhea with emphasis on polycystic ovarian syndrome

l        List the uterine causes of amenorrhea with emphasis on Asherman’s syndrome

l        Describe the investigations of amenorrhea patients

l        Outline management of amenorrhea

l        Take an appropriate history from an amenorrhea patient

l        Order the appropriate investigations from an amenorrhea patient

l        Assess secondary sexual characters
