SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS
RATIONALE
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are an
important element of RH. They are not only significant causes of morbidity in
women but they may be fatal (e.g., HIV). Prevention and adequate treatment of
both partners are important in gynecological and obstetric practice.
GOAL
Recognize causes, types, and methods of diagnosis and management of STIs.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
By the end of this course, the
student will be able to:

Recognize different STIs, including
gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes simplex,
human papillomavirus (HPV),
chlamydia, and HIV, and have some knowledge about each of the following:

Microbiology of the causative organism

Pathology
·
Clinical picture
·
Complications including relations to genital
malignancy and obstetric complications
·
Diagnosis including special investigation
·
Differential diagnosis
·
Prevention and treatment
