LOWER GENITAL TRACT INFECTIONS
RATIONALE
Almost every woman suffers from a genital tract infectionan infection of the cervix, vagina, or vulvaat least once in her life. These infections produce distressing symptoms and may have a negative impact on the womans quality of life. Some of these infections may spread to the upper genital tract, causing PID.
GOAL
Understand the normal vaginal flora, defensive mechanisms of the female genital tract, causative organisms, clinical picture, diagnosis, and treatment of lower genital tract infection
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
By the end of this course, the student will be able to:
· Understand vaginal flora
· Describe the defensive mechanisms of the female genital tract
· List the causative organisms of the lower genital tract infections
· Describe the clinical picture of lower genital tract infections
· Diagnose and treat lower genital tract infections

l Vulvitis: etiology, clinical picture, diagnosis, and treatment
l Differential diagnosis of pruritus vulvae
l Differential diagnosis of genital ulcer
l Vaginitis: types, microbiology of causative organism, clinical picture, special investigations and treatment
l Cervicitis: causes, pathology, clinical picture, diagnosis, complications, prevention and treatment
