UTERINE FIBROIDS

 

RATIONALE

 

Leiomyomas are the most common benign tumor found in women, as they affect 25 percent of women in the reproductive age group. Although a majority of leiomyomas are discovered in symptom-free women at routine examination, significant symptoms may occur, including pelvic pain, hypermenorrhea, infertility, and habitual abortion. Accordingly, the knowledge and skills of graduates should be updated to accommodate recent data about fibroids.

 

GOALS

 

l        Define the magnitude of fibroid problems and the different types

l        Utilize basic diagnostic tools and recognize the different modalities for treatment

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

 

By the end of this course, the student will be able to:

l        Describe the pathology of uterine fibroids

l        List complications of uterine fibroids

l        Describe symptoms and signs of fibroids

l        Interpret different investigations and DD of fibroids

l        Describe different lines of treatment according to different types and conditions

l        State complications of fibroids during pregnancy

l        List types of uterine polyps
