TOPIC 77
ENDOMETRIOSIS AND ADENOMYOSIS
RATIONALE
Endometriosis is relatively common, although the
incidence in which it presents as a pelvic mass remains uncertain. In most
series, 75 percent of all patients with endometriosis are between 20 and 40
years of age, although it has been reported in teenagers. It is the most
common cause of chronic pelvic pain and Dys syndrome. These symptoms, however,
are not directly related to the amount of disease, and may cause severe
psychic and motor disabilities. Accordingly, the knowledge and skills of
graduates should be updated to accommodate recent data on the etiology and
pathophysiology of endometriosis.
