CANCER OF THE CERVIX

 

RATIONALE

 

Invasive cancer of the cervix has been considered a preventable cancer because it has a long pre-invasive state, cervical cytology screening programs are available, and the treatment of pre-invasive lesions is effective. Accordingly, the incidence of invasive disease can be decreased if cancer of the cervix is diagnosed earlier, leading to better survival rates.

 

GOALS

 

l        Understand the pathology of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and invasive cervical cancer

l        Recognize the methods of diagnosis of CIN and invasive disease

l        Understand the protocols of treatment of CIN and invasive cervical cancer

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

 

By the end of the course, the student will be able to:

l        Describe the pathology of CIN

l        Describe the pathology of invasive cervical cancer
