CONTRACEPTION

 

RATIONALE

 

Family planning is an essential part of delivering comprehensive women’s health care during the life cycle. Medical students should not only be knowledgeable about the current methods and efficacy of contraception, they should also have the skills (e.g., IUD insertion, non-scalpel vasectomy, bilateral tubal ligation) for providing these method, and good counseling and communication skills to address this issue consistently with all women of child-bearing age. This will help improve the quality of FP/RH provided in the Egyptian National Family Planning Program.

 

GOALS

 

l        Understand the different contraceptive methods: their uses, types, advantages, disadvantages, and complications

l        Recognize essential practices and necessary skills

l        Ensure technical sustainability of the Egyptian National Family Planning Program

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

 

By the end of this course, the student will be able to:

l        Describe the mechanism of action of combined pills (COP), progestin only pills (POP), injectables, and Norplant® implants

l        Enumerate the types of oral contraceptives and injectables

l        List the advantages disadvantages and side effects of COP, POP, injectables and Norplant implants

l        Describe the methods of administration of COP, POP, injectables, and Norplant implants

l        Council the patient about hormonal contraception

l        Enumerate types of intrauterine contraceptives devices (IUCD)

l        List advantages, disadvantages, and side effects of IUCD

l        Describe the technique of insertion and mention the timing of IUCD insertion

l        List the complications and contraindications of IUCD

l        Council the patient about IUCD

l        Enumerate advantages and disadvantages of the lactational amenorrhea method

l        List advantages, disadvantages, and side effects of the male and female condom, vaginal diaphragm, and cervical cap

l        Describe the periodic abstinence method and withdrawal method, and list their advantages and disadvantages

l        Select the appropriate method for lactating woman

l        Council the patient about physiological and barrier methods

l        List advantages, disadvantages, and side effects of male and female sterilization

l        State methods of emergency post-coital contraception

l        IUCD: types, advantages, disadvantages, complications, timing, and technique of insertion

l        Barrier methods (the male and female condom, vaginal diaphragm and cervical cap): characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages

l        Female and male sterilization: techniques, advantages, and disadvantages

l        Methods of emergency contraception

l        Lactational amenorrhea method

l        Other non-hormonal methods

l        Periodic abstinence and withdrawal
